DMLMobile_Free is a free movie library app for Android phones. This app was created so that users of the Windows DML application could carry a copy of their movie library with them wherever they went. Anybody can use the app to add and display movie titles. Once added, the titles can be sorted, or quickly found through the search function. But, once a title has been added on the free version, any editing or deleting must be done through the Windows application. Please ensure you are using DML Windows version 3.5.6 or higher to create the DMLMobile files. If you are using the free version to evaluate DMLMobile, any movie titles loaded can be saved to a backup file that can then be loaded straight into either another free mobile version, or a paid mobile version of the app. The backup files contain all the extra data that is displayed in the paid version but not seen in the free app. You can also create a file that can be used to add all titles from your free app to a Windows version.
New for version 2.2.2 Version 2.2.2 has been updated to be able to use the new DML Windows files (DML Windows version 3.5.0 and higher). If you are going to use the files from a DML Windows app (version 3.5.0 or above) you must upgrade your DML_Free version to at least version 2.2.2. This new version will update any existing files in your old app so that they will work with all current DML and DMLMobile apps.
** For users of the 'Shelves' database app ** Users of 'Shelves' databases can transfer their movie titles into a Windows DML app so that it can be output to both mobile versions. See Download Movie Titles Using A Shelves database File on the DML Instructions page.
This app gives users the ability to catalog their movie collection and take it with them wherever they go. There is a search function that allows for fast finding of movie titles. The list can be sorted by movie title alphabetically from A to Z, or sorted by release date showing the latest releases first. The movie list display can be zoomed to show (depending on your device) either two or four movie titles per screen. The movie list display features a thumbnail image of the movie cover, and the following information when zoomed in to fit 2 movie titles to the display;
When zoomed in to fit approximately 4 movie titles to the display, the Cast is not displayed; The Movie List display is shown below. The first image shows the list sorted by Release Date and zoomed in to show two movie titles per display space, the second shows the list sorted by Release Date and zoomed out to show four movie titles per display space. Tapping the icon with 4 lines will zoom the display out to show four movie titles(depending on your device) per display space. The icon will then display 2 lines which when tapped will zoom the display to show two movie titles(depending on your device) per display space again. Tapping the AZ icon will sort the list by title alphabetically from A to Z. The icon will then display the calendar icon which when tapped will sort the list by Release Date again. The search function is started when you enter text in the search textbox at the top of the display (see the search field in the images above). If you are only testing the system, make sure you have enough titles loaded to be able to search for something that is further down the list. If you only have a few titles loaded and the title you are searching for is already displayed, it may seem as if the search isn't doing anything. The Selected Movie Page shows the following details of the movie.
The image below shows the Selected Movie page. As mentioned earlier, you need to use the DML for Windows application (2.0.5 or higher) to edit or delete titles in your movie collection. ** New ... File System Access from April 2021 ** Going forward from now (April 2021), DML will no longer directly access the public file system on Android devices. To work around this we have the option to store your backup files in an internal directory (Android / data / com.DMLMobile_Free / files / Download) which allows us to directly access files as we do now from the public 'Download' directory. In this case you will not notice any difference in how DMLMobile_Free works. The first image below shows the File Operations Page. The next image shows the internal 'Download' directory that is displayed when the 'Load Update File' button is tapped. The other option is to use a File Picker to allow you to select what files to load and what directories to store them in. The image above shows the root directory of the device, displayed when the 'Load Update File' button is tapped. Select the directory and file you want to load your update file from. If you tapped 'Create Win Backup File' the Picker in the image below will show for you to select the folder to save the file to. The File Picker option is what we will use from now onwards for devices running Android ver 6.0 (api level 23) and above. Devices running older versions than this will only be able to save and retrieve files from the internal Download directory. The internal directory path is shown below (Android / data / com.DMLMobile_Free / files / Download) You should always store a copy of your backup files seperate to your device (on a PC, tablet, Google Drive etc) in case it is lost or damaged. This is even more important if your device uses the internal directory as this directory will be deleted if you uninstall DMLMobile_Free for any reason. Selecting the appropriate DMLMobileMovies or DMLMobBackup file will update existing, and load new movie titles into your mobile app. Due to some older phones having issues with large files, the total amount of movie titles per file will be 500. This will create a file of approximately 10MB in size. If you had 1200 movie titles in your library, DML would create three files to transfer, DMLMobBackup_1To500.txt, DMLMobBackup_501To1000.txt, and DMLMobBackup_1001To1200.txt These files contain everything needed to load new movie titles into the app, even the images are contained within the text file, so there is no usage of your data to download anything other than getting the file into your downloads folder in the first place. Update files from the PC use the naming convention of DMLMobileMovies_Update1To12.txt, the '1to12' signifies the amount of movies in the update file. For more on creating files for the app, see Create Files For DML Mobile The image below shows the File Operations page and the options you can choose from. The 'Load Update File' button at the top of the page either takes you to the internal 'Download' folder, or opens a file picker for you to select the public folder where you select the appropriate file to load or update your app. The 'Create Win Backup File' button either creates a file in your internal 'Download' folder, or opens a file picker for you to select the public folder where you want to save the file. The file contains the movie title, the TMDb ID of the title, and the disk type you have specified when loading the title originally. The Windows version cannot load directly from a mobile backup file as it uses many more details than the mobile app does, so it must download the details it requires from TMDb. Because the TMDb ID is used, users do not need to worry about multiple results for a title search, the correct title will always be returned. The 'Create Mobile Backup File' button creates a backup file of your library either in your internal 'Download' folder, or it opens a file picker for you to select the public folder where you want to save the file. This file is in the same format as the DMLMobileMovies files created by the Windows application for loading or updating. The naming convention used for the mobile backup is DMLMobBackup_ rather than DMLMobileMovies. These files can be used to store as a backup, to load another DMLFree app, or to load into a paid version of the app. The free version does not give you any of the other features of the paid app like manually adding, editing, or removing movie titles, or the use of the filtering tools. It does allow users to add movie titles via the TMDb interface, but once added, the information for each movie title cannot be edited or deleted in the free mobile app. Once again, this free version was designed for users of the Windows DML application and all editing must be done through the Windows version. If you start off using DMLMobile_Free to add your movies instead of the Windows application, you can create a text file to use with a new Windows installation (see 'Create Win Backup File' above). This file is called "DMLMobileForWinCreation_" followed by the number of titles it contains. Your new Windows DML application will use the TMDb ID for each movie title in the file to download the correct movie information and add it to your library. Once this is done you can then edit the movie titles as you wish and create update files for your mobile app.
DMLMobile is a movie library app for Android phones. This version is the full paid version (NZD $3.29 - approx US $2.35 - plus any applicable sales tax / GST / VAT etc) Unlike the Free App, this full version does not need files from a DML Windows version to edit details in the library, it has the ability to add, edit, or delete movie titles directly. The paid version gives users many additional features such as several filtering functions, extra sorting selections, displaying additional information, ability to choose whether to load and save files to the public or internal folders, and when a movie is selected in the paid version, users have the option to view larger cover images. This overview is for version 1.9.3
New for version 1.9.3 (Released May 2nd 2023) Version 1.9.3 has been updated for use with Android 13. Fixed A Bug Fixed an issue where in some cases users could no longer download new titles through the TMDb page. Search Function The search function now checks how your library has been sorted and if not already Sorted A-Z, it sorts it Alphabetically A - Z before starting the search. Added a random Select button - For those times when you just can't decide what to watch, let DML randomly select a title for you.
This app gives users the ability to catalog their movie collection and take it with them on their phone wherever they go. There is a search function that allows for fast finding of movie titles. The filter page allows for filtering results by Actor, Release year, MyRating, Genre, or specific text contained within the Title and / or Notes. Movie titles can be added using the TMDb interface, manually added, or added using the DMLMobileMovies files created by the windows version of DML. Movie titles can be edited to your preferences. Disc storage locations can be specified, and discs specified as On Loan, and to who they have been loaned. The movie list can be sorted by grouped title, movie title ascending or descending, sorted by release date ascending or descending, or sorted by the date the movie title was added to your library. The movie list display can be zoomed to show (depending on your device) either two or four movie titles per screen. If your device operates on Android ver 6.0 (api 23) or higher, you can choose whether to use the internal directories, or the file pickers to load and save files. The display for two movies visible per screen features an image of the movie cover, and the following information;
The display for four movie titles visible per screen does not display any cast information and the image is smaller. When a movie title is selected, the app switches to the Movie View page and displays a cover image and the following information;
The Movie List displays are shown below. The first image shows 2 movie titles per screen, the second shows 4 titles per screen. In both examples the list is sorted by Release Date. Tapping the 2 bar icon will display 2 titles per display(depending on your device). The icon will then display 4 bars which when tapped will display 4 titles per display(depending on your device) again. The next icon along defines how the movie list is sorted. The sort menu is shown below. Changing the sort order will also change the icon that is displayed so that it represents the selected sort order. Selecting 'Title A-Z' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by 'Title' (A to Z). Selecting 'Title Z-A' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by 'Title' (Z to A). Selecting 'Title A-Z Use Groups' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by the 'Group Title' (A to Z). Selecting 'Release Date Newest First' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by 'Release Date' (Latest movies first). Selecting 'Release Date Oldest First' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by 'Release Date' (Oldest movies first). Selecting 'Date Added To Library' will display this icon and will sort the movie list by the date the title was added to the library. Search Function The search function is started when you enter text in the search textbox at the top of the display (see the search field circled in the image above). If you are only testing the system, make sure you have enough titles loaded to be able to search for something that is further down the list. If you only have a few titles loaded and the title you are searching for is already displayed, it may seem as if the search isn't doing anything. When you initiate the search function, before it performs the search it will check that you are sorted alphabetically A-Z, if not, it will sort it alphabetically A-Z. This is the most efficient way to search. Random Selection When your library gets so large that you have problems deciding what to watch, let DML randomly pick a movie for you. Tap the box with the question marks to the right of the search textbox (pictured in the image below) and see what DML comes up with.
The details displayed in the Selected Movie page are;
The selected movie view is shown below. Tapping 'View This Movie Title On TMDb' will take you to the selected movie on the The Movie Database (TMDb.org) website where all details of the movie can be viewed. Tapping the text in the 'Homepage' section will take you to the homepage of the selected movie. If you want to link a website to a particular movie, use the edit function to replace the homepage url with the url of the site you want to link to. The selected movie view is shown below with the disc loaned to 'Jimmy Jandals'. To view a larger cover image while on the Movie View page, tap the image. DML will download a larger version of the image from the TMDb.org website. These larger images are not saved in the app as they are approximately 10 times the size of the smaller images and when your library holds in excess of a thousand movie titles, the app would start to take up too much of your device storage. You will obviously need an internet connection to be able to download any larger images. Each larger image is approximately 100 - 120KB. The larger image is shown below. You can then swipe down as shown below. When you leave the Movie View page, this larger image will be discarded. This version still has the ability to load DMLMobileMovie files or DMLMobileMovie_Update files from the DML Windows version as well. If you do use this option, please ensure you are using the latest DML Windows version (3.5.6 or higher) to create the DMLMobile files.
From the selected Movie Page you can edit any of the details by tapping the pencil icon at the top right of the page. The edit page for the selected movie is shown below. The first image shows the edit page with the disc not loaned, the second shows it loaned to 'Jimmy Jandals' Note the new 'Group Title' item in the first image. If this is done for all Marvels movies in your library, when you sort by grouped title, it will group all Marvels movie titles together. Add 'DC' for DC Comics movies etc. You can now change the cover image for each title (from version 1.4.5 onwards). As seen below, the selected cover image is shown just below the Overview section. To change it, tap the image. A list will pop up along the left side as shown below. Tap one of the list items to change the image. When you find the image you want, tap the save icon at the top of the page. If you have loaded your library from an older Windows version, you will probably only have one option on the list. To refresh the list, tap the "Reload Image List From TMDb" button. This will load the list with all available cover images. If you tap the save icon this list will be stored for future use.
Using the menu on the homepage (shown below) you can navigate to the Add Movie Title pages where you can add movie titles, either manually or through the TMDb interface. To use the TMDb Download Page ... Enter a title and tap the 'Find Movie' button. When a single movie title is returned, it will load all details here in the TMDb Download Page. When you have checked, and are happy with the details, either tap the save icon at the top of the page, or swipe to the bottom of the page and tap the 'Save To Library' button. When multiple results are found, the first title in the returned list is loaded. The rest of the titles are loaded into pages of up to 20 titles per page - as shown below for the searched title of 'Batman'. To view more results tap the 'Show All Results' button. The first page of returned titles will be loaded as shown below. If the title you are looking for is not on this page, use the arrows at the top of the screen to go to the next page. When you find your title, simply tap it to have it load to the TMDb Download Page. When you have checked and are happy with the details, either scroll to the bottom of the page and tap the 'Save To Library' button, or just tap the save icon at the top right of the TMDb page.
Using the 'File Operations' menu on the homepage (shown below) will take you to the file operations page where you will be able to;
** New ... File System Access from April 2021 ** Going forward from now, DML will no longer directly access the public filesystem on Android devices. To work around this we have the option to store your backup files in an internal directory (Android / data / com.DMLMobile / files / Download) which allows us to directly access files as we do now from the public 'Download' directory. In this case you will not notice any difference in how DMLMobile works. The first image below shows the File Operations Page. The next image shows the internal 'Download' directory that is displayed when the 'Load A File' button is tapped and the 'Internal File Sys' checkbox is selected. Selecting (checking) the 'Internal File Sys' checkbox seen in the images below will set your app to run on the internal system described above (Android ver 6.0 and above). The checkbox will not be visible if your device is running less than Android ver 6.0 The other option is to use a File Picker to allow you to select what files to load and what directories to store them in. De-selecting (un-checking) the 'Internal File Sys' checkbox seen in the images above will set your app to run with the filepickers (Android ver 6.0 and above). The image above shows the root directory of the device, displayed when the 'Load Update File' button is tapped and the internal File Sys checkbox is not selected. Select the directory and file you want to load your update file from. If you tapped 'Create Win Backup File' the Picker in the image below will show for you to select the folder to save the file to. If you are running Android version 6.0 (api23) or higher you have the option of choosing whether to use either the internal Download directory, or the file pickers to select any directory. This is done by selecting or de-selecting the 'Internal File Sys' checkbox on the File Operations page. Devices running older versions, less than Android 6.0 (api23) You will not have this checkbox option. The default in this case is the internal Download directory for all file functions. The internal directory path is shown below (Android / data / com.DMLMobile / files / Download) You should always store a copy of your backup files separate to your device (on a PC, tablet, Google Drive etc) in case it is lost or damaged. This is even more important if your device uses the internal directory as this directory will be deleted if you uninstall DMLMobile for any reason.
Use the 'Filter Movies' menu on the homepage (shown below) to take you to the filter page. The 'Filter Page' is shown below Tapping the 'Show All Notes' button will display all movies that have notes added - as shown in the image below. Tapping the 'Show Movies On Loan' button will display all movies that have been designated as on loan - as shown in the image below. Tapping the 'Show Filter Tools' button will return to the filter tools view. You can enter as many filter fields as you want. The example below shows the result of filtering by actor name 'bruce willis'. There are 42 titles in this library that Bruce Willis appears in. Filtering by actor name 'bruce willis' and release year after '1999' will show all movies in the library that feature Bruce Willis and were released from the year 2000 onwards. In this case there are 23 results. The image below shows the filter page setup to filter the library by actor name 'bruce willis', release year after '1999' and MyRating = Really Good (4 check marks). This returns 7 titles as shown below. Off course, selecting any of the movies returned in this filtered list will show you the complete movie view as shown below for the movie title 'Die Hard 5'
